Our aim in education is to give a full life. We owe it to them to initiate an immense number of interests. Life should be all living, and not merely a tedious passing of time; not all doing or all feeling or all thinking - the strain would be too great - but, all living; that is to say, we should be in touch wherever we go, whatever we hear, whatever we see, with some manner of vital interest.

~ Charlotte Mason

We work hard to provide a strong, core classical program, but believe that learning opportunities exist in a variety of settings and that exposure to many subject areas is a wonderful way to round-out our children’s education by providing opportunities to help children discover new areas of interest.   We also believe that exposure to the wonder and beauty of fine arts plays an essential role in the life of a classically education student (and family!).

Fine arts is often included in our everyday classrooms through historical studies and hands-on learning that accompanies it.  At this time, all Lower Middle School students have art built in to their program consistently with an art instructor, and other levels have ample opportunities to take optional classes.

We work to offer a great variety of class options that nurtures the love for fine arts and exposure to the arts, life skills, physical exercise and additional academic areas.  These classes are opportunities to meet requirements for fine arts and PE or just to provide and even richer learning experience.  They are optional and at an additional cost.

Enrichment Classes

These classes are for Kindergarten through Intermediate students (K-4th), held mid-week from 1:30-3:30.   When you sign-up for these classes you are committing to the year. We usually offer art and a P.E. option, and currently offer a Guitar Jam hour for kids in middle school (5th-8th).  In addition, we offer an after school Running Club from 3:30-4:30 for middle and high school students.

Academy Classes

Academy Classes are optional short-term Friday classes for all ages focused on a variety of subjects (such as music, fencing, film and art).  There is an 8-week session each trimester and the classes are held from 11:30-3:30.  Most classes are an hour long, but a few are 2 hours.  We try to include several opportunities to meet the fine arts requirement and work to provide a line-up that will interest both genders at all levels.

Academy Classes are also open to the community after SLOCA families have had first priority in signing up.  While the tuition price is the same, non-SLOCA families must pay in full before classes begin unless another arrangement is made in advance.

Academy Classes Tuition:  Academy Classes tuition is based on how many classes each student signs up for each trimester.  The tuition will be divided into 2 payments and billed to your statement.  Please contact academyclasses@sloclassicalacademy.com

Additional Classes:

Occasionally, we offer courses that don't quite "fit" the mold of enrichment or academy classes.  This year, we offer a California History class for 3rd-5th graders that meet on various Friday mornings.  This class uses literature and art to expose students to our state's rich history, with an occasional field trip sprinkled in!
