A long time ago, there was no preschool or junior kindergarten at SLO Classical Academy. But alas! Eventually Little Wonders was born because SLO Classical Academy siblings were home begging to start their learning adventures (and parents begged for help!). Our early childhood program was built on the words of Socrates: "Widsom begins with wonder."
For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does ‘just for fun’ and things that are educational. The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play. – Penelope Leach, Ph.D
memorize and recite nursery rhymes, read and discuss great literature, discover the outside world, learn hands-on math, play purposefully, analyze poetry, get messy, create works of art, experience intentional relaxation time, and be known.
guidance for learning at home, knowing your child and getting to explore and discover, the enriching learning environment, community for your child, support from teacher and fellow parents, and small class sizes.
Little wonders is intentional in helping children achieve and sustain higher levels of exploration, as they are provided ample time, space, materials and support to lead them to engage in play that is safe, imaginative and filled with purpose and meaning.
Fostering a love of literature that spans your child’s lifetime is an ever-present priority throughout our school. This is achieved by exposing children to the best possible literature; books that are well written, have delightful illustrations, are timeless, capture the child’s imagination and cultivate understanding about literacy.
We are deliberate in our teaching of mathematics and continually encourage children to engage in deep mathematical thinking. In the early years we provide them with open-ended, hands-on math to help them develop their natural, logical mathematical minds
We assist children in developing a love of nature by helping them interact with and observe it first hand. Children get out daily for nature walks, using all five senses to notice natural patterns. Teaching children to be observant and curious gifts them with skills that will impact all areas of their learning.
